Crouch will be chairman

LEON Crouch WILL be appointed acting chairman of Saints' football board.

The Daily Echo understands Crouch has softened his position with regards to seeking executive powers if he took on the role vacated by Michael Wilde.

Now he is desperate to ensure everyone involved with Saints gets fully behind George Burley and the players ahead of the final 11 games of the season.

Lymington-based businessman Crouch has told those running the club - PLC chairman Ken Dulieu and chief executive Jim Hone - that he is happy to carry on as chairman.

Saints were today expected to release a statement confirming the apppointment, which should be formally ratified at a PLC board meeting a week today A source told the Daily Echo: "This is the best solution for the club.

"This is an absolutely crucial time of the season and now we can get on with focussing on the football".

Crouch's appointment should end a hectic week where boardroom issues dominated fans' talk instead of the ongoing promotion race.

Why oh why are people even suggesting that McMenemy should be chairman of our great club. He is too old and is past it.
What we need is a chairman who is bloody loaded so we can afford to play with the big boys, not some old **** with a free bus pass.

To put Big Mac involed as chairman would be the biggest mistake the club could make.He cant talk properly and no one can understand a word he say's.Yes the team won the FA Cup 1976, but lets not dwell on the past, lets move on !!! Come on Saints.

That's good news that its sorted. With Leon Crouch what you see is what you get.

At least he shows passion for the club - which is what we've been crying out for in the last 10 years.

COYR!

Under the circumstances its probably the best thing that Crouch does the role. Clearly he will probably only invest if he feels he at least has some major role. Anyone suggesting LM needs their head examined as he was past history and hospitality is about as much of a role as he should be given.

LM, are you mad? I am, but even I can see LM is a bad idea... onwards and upwards Saints, dont live in the past!

The Deal is Done - Time to move on until such time as we find someone with more oney than sense and an over inflated ego !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I'm glad everyone is anti Lawrie getting the post. He's never really made any sacrifices for the club and swanned off around the Souness time and did well out of the club with his selling shares, enjoying hospitality with the ex players, etc. and living off winning the FA cup for Saints (We're grateful but don't milk it!) but I don't see what he can give to the club. His age too.

Crouch is a good Saints man and seems a dedicated fan but he hadn't taken much of a proactive role this season with all the uncertainty. I now hope he will step from the shadows and become more active. I just hope he's not a figurehead or puppet for Hone esq. We need leadership and I am far from convinced by the last 2 seasons and the running of the club. Please make things happen and develop the club forwards, try and prevent our beloved club from continuing to become a farce & laughing stock, selling any talent & producing mediocre performances hinged on ill-founded over-optimism!

I forgot to add, I do realise he's not playing such an active part (as Wilde had) which does concern me as I am not confident as to the club's ambition and so much hinging on investment. It seems we don't have one single person or board member (assuming Wilde's 2 million has now been pulled?!) willing to put any money in. Ian Gordon @ Paris Smith and Randall, etc. Is he still on the board? what have these long standing members contributed to the club over the last 2 decades?! I'd be interested to know.

At last a REAL Saints supporter as a chairman !

I'll 2nd that. Shame he's pretty powerless though and it's only a stand in thing!

I Cannot agree that McMenemy is past his best. He is one of the best ambassadors SFC has got.He is the one person at the club who in my opinion could secure a real investor for the club.If Pompey can do it so can Saints! I wish Leon Crouch the very best of luck as chairman. I think he should enlist McMenemy's help in this particular aim.

I realise he's a great Saints fan and character but it doesn't matter if you're Le Tiss or Saints No. 1 fan, if you've got limited powers within the managerial set-up, there's only so much you can do. Hone, esq. have it set up so they're pulling all the strings, not the chairman!

I am sick of hearing and reading comments about Mr Crouch wanting to be chairmman of the Saints as part of anm Ego trip. This man is passionate of the Saints, and could of done alot for the club as chairman. This man doesnt need any EGO trips in his life at all. Dont make comments suggesting EGO trips unless you know this man.He is a normal guy who had nothing at all and built up an empire that now turns over millions in profit every year, is that not enough to satisfy his Ego, the football is his life and so is the Saints its not an Ego thing at all. This man is Genourous threw and threw and maybe if people knew him, they woud not suggest he is on an EGO trip.He may be a Multi Millionaire now but i camn tell you he worked hard for that and had nothing at one time in his life, it was not handed to him on a silver spoon. And i note his Charity work and Numerous Large donations dont ever get mentioned, let me tell you why because he insists on that.! This man has no Ego trip with Southampton just as he has no EGO with his generous Donations towards local courses in Hampshire, you dont here about that, why cus he doesnt want people thinking he is on an EGO trip,.
